Bishop Ferenc Cserháti, Auxiliary Bishop of Esztergom-Budapest, who is also Coordinator of the pastoral service of migrants of the Hungarian Conference of Catholic Bishops, visited on June 28, 2009 the St. Stephen of Hungary Catholic Community of Washington, DC, the religious community organization formally created in 2005 to represent the long-standing historical faith community of the Hungarian-speaking Catholics of the Washington DC metropolitan area. The community is named after the first saint and King of Hungary, founder of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1000 AD, precursor of the modern Hungarian State. Besides long-time residents, our community of the faithful often includes visitors, who include visiting relatives of members of our community and also migrants who happen to visit, study or work temporarily or permanently in the Washington, DC area.Since our community is a migrant community, our members were truly elated to be recognized and honored as a visible and vibrant community of the faith who wishes to worship and serve not only in the language of our adopted country, but in the language of our ancestors as well. The community also wishes to be spiritually connected to our homeland of origin, Hungary, including the Hungarian-speaking brothers and sisters of the countries now surrounding Hungary where there are still sizable Hungarian-speaking communities of faith, that is, in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova, Croatia and Austria. These communities of believers are mostly survivors of the imposed political break-up of the historic lands of St. Stephen in 1920, and expression of our kinship with them is an important component of our spiritual journey. Naturally, we also feel strong ties with all the Hungarian-speaking communities that are nearer to us, particularly those in the United States and Canada, who, as with the more distant ones, share with us similar joys and concerns.The visit of Bishop Cserháti was organized by Fr. Barnabás G. Kiss, OFM, with assistance of Fr. Ágoston Bagyinszki, OFM of Hungary, who currently serves on a provisional basis, the pastoral ministry of the St. Stephen of Hungary Catholic Community of Washington, DC.Bishop Cserhátis visit opened with the celebration of the Holy Mass in Hungarian at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and was followed by an agape or luncheon at the Westchester apartments in Washington, DC.In his homily Bishop Cserháti shared with the worshipers his pastoral mission that reaches from the Carpathian basin, that is, Hungary and the neighboring countries, to Vancouver in Canada and Sydney, Australia, to spread the good news and prayers for the unity of the Church and the unity of our migrant communities. He cited Pope John Paul II in saying that the prayer of the Pope covers our whole wide world and also made reference the 2000 jubilee year of the birth of St. Paul, Apostle of the Migrants that the Roman Catholic Church has been celebrating throughout the year.
Later, at the luncheon, commenting on his personal journey, Bishop Cserháti recalled that he was five or six years old in his native town of Túrterebes (today, in Romania) when he felt was called to serve God at a time of dictatorial repression. He reminded his audience that he never felt that pastoral service required particular knowledge, only the ability to pray and to serve. He particularly has taken to heart the courageous stand of the late József Cardinal Mindszenty, who endured prison in the totalitarian regime of communism and after October 1956, in internal exile, but never wavered in proclaiming that love is able to overcome everything.After luncheon, the participants were able to voice concerns of the community, not only in the United States but also overseas. With this pastoral visit, the St. Stephen of Hungary Catholic Community has experienced a renewed sense of community and will pray to have the blessing of a permanent pastoral ministry.János Szekeres
Észak-amerikai lelkipásztori körútjának befejező állomásaként Cserháti Ferenc, a külföldi magyarok lelkipásztori ellátásával megbízott esztergom-budapesti segédpüspök, öt napra az amerikai fővárosba, Washingtonba érkezett. A vendéget a helyi katolikus közösség képviseletében Bagyinszki Ágoston OFM fogadta, aki a Katolikus Egyetemen folytatott doktori tanulmányai mellett több környékbeli magyar közösségnek lelkipásztora.
A püspöki látogatás csúcspontja a június 28-án, a környék magyarságával együtt ünnepelt vasárnapi szentmise és az azt követő ünnepi ebéd volt. A közel 200 főnyi jelenlévő a havi magyar szentmiséknek otthont adó Szeplőtelen Fogantatás Bazilikában, a kegytemplom alkápolnájában ünnepelte az Eukarisztiát Cserháti Ferenc püspök vezetésével. Ez a templom az Egyesült Államok püspöki konferenciájának központi irodaépülete mellett foglal helyet és központi szerepet játszik az ország hitéletében. Ferenc püspök Szent Pál apostol alakját, mint a diaszpóra-misszió korai mintáját állította homiliájának középpontjába a migráns lelkipásztorkodás összefüggésében. Beszédében a Szent Pál év lezárása kapcsán aktuális számvetésre buzdított. Ezen kívül a főapostolok ünnepének előestéjén a tengeren túlról Erdő Péter bíboros-prímás atya névnapjáról is megemlékezett. A szentmisét művészi hegedű és orgonajáték tette még ünnepélyesebbé. A liturgikus ünneplés után a közösség egy közeli étteremben jött össze közös ebédre, melynek során több, mint egy órás spontán beszélgetés alakult ki a püspök és a jelenlévők között a világ katolikus magyarságának sorskérdéseiről.Az ünnepi szentmisén és a lelkipásztori látogatás hétvégi programján távolabbról érkező koncelebránsok is részt vettek: Kiss G. Barnabás OFM, a püspök észak-amerikai delegátusa, Allan von Kobs, a Holy Name Provincia tagja, Miskolczy Kálmán SchP, devoni nyugalmazott lelkipásztor, valamint Sztaniszlav Horowicz SchP Kamerunban szolgáló magyar-barát lengyel atya. Cserháti püspök emlékeztetett rá, hogy a külföldi magyar lelkipásztorkodás szerves része a világegyház életének. A hívek soraiban is sok különböző közösség (cserkészek, máltai lovagok, helyi reformátusok stb…) képviseltette magát.Öt napos fővárosi látogatása során Ferenc püspök sokakkal elmélyült beszélgetésre is talált alkalmat. Programja részeként e mellett a környék keresztény vonatkozású nevezetességeit is fölkereste. Látogatást tett a Princeton Egyetemen (New Jersey) és a washingtoni kormányzati negyedben is.A washingtoni magyar katolikus közösség története a II. világháború előtti időkbe nyúlik vissza, amikor már értelmiségi emigránsok is egyre nagyobb számban érkeztek az amerikai kontinensre. Ők a főváros környékén könnyen találtak maguknak munkát. Az ötvenes évek elejétől, majd 1956 után duzzadt fel a helyi magyar közösség létszáma. Ezzel párhuzamosan a magyar piarista atyák is megtelepedtek washingtonban. 1974-es látogatásakor Mindszenty bíboros 2.000 lelket számláló közösséget talált a földrajzi területét tekintve kicsiny, de közéleti szempontból világpolitikai jelentőségű városban. Irányi László, a külföldi magyarok első püspöke, négy éven keresztül helyben lakó lelkipásztora volt a közösségnek. Az ő utóda, Miklósházy Attila püspök úr hivatalosan 1992-ben látogatott washingtonba. Ezeknek a katolikus közösség lelki történetében mérföldkövet jelentő ünnepeknek a sorába tartozik Cserháti Ferenc püspök atya jelenlegi látogatása is. A Szeplőtelen Fogantatás Bazilika altemplomában a közeljövőben megvalósuló Magyar Kápolna új lelki otthonnal fogja megajándékozni a környék és az egész világ katolikus magyarságát.Bagyinszki P.
